So...the trailers for the Warcraft movie are out and the movie is going to be based on...Warcraft 1! Interesting. When a Warcraft movie was first announced it was a pretty safe assumption that it would be WoW based given how that game has been Blizz's cash cow and has a lot more lore to pick from. Understandable though, since Wc1 has become such a forgotten game and the lore associated with it lost as well, all the while being equally important as the stuff that's coming out today.

It will also limit them on what races they would able to use, wouldn't it? The original Warcraft was literally named "Orcs vs Humans" and those were the only two races that made an appearance, the others weren't involved or hadn't even been discovered yet. I'm sure they can still fit dwarves and high elves in there, but the rest would be a bit more difficult.

But I already have a feeling what they're going to do- rewrite history to make it look like the horde wasn't acting on behalf of pure evil. In any case, I will be sure to see it anyway. Anyone else planning to watch it?

It'll be a while longer before the film is screened in Australia. :(

My curiosity regarding S & K is growing here. That's some building! Too big for a shrine. A full-blown temple?

I see Birdy is considering some choice lupine meat! Anyway, on Warcraft the movie, I can see why they're starting from the beginning. It's an old franchise to be sure, but they want the movie to appeal to a broader audience than just WoW players, and with so much ground to cover, why not start from the beginning? Anywhere else might end up being information overload. After all, most folks are familiar with elves and dwarves, but toss in Draenei and three different varieties of elves, and Tauren and Warcraft's take on trolls and you've got more exposition than storytelling. Some of those things *might* make an appearance, but likely in background so as not to overwhelm any audience not familiar with WoW.

In one of the extended trailers, draenei were shown...being sacrificed by Gul'Dan to power up the Dark Portal. That's probably about the extent to be expected.

If they are going by WC1, then strictly speaking there is no "Horde" yet. We have the accumulated Orc clans of the Old Horde, but with the exception of Durotan, I don't see them making the Orcs into Care Bears. They're probably going strictly with the demon blood Horde, with Durotan's Frostwolves being the holdouts they originally were. I will be seeing it unless Blizzard pisses me off more than they have already, which is considerable.

They actually announced way back that the movie would be set in the era of WarCraft 1. At one time they also said the movie would revolve around a human (because non-gaming audiences could relate to a human better than an Orc) and while it would feature cameos of established lore characters, the story itself would NOT be directly based on existing characters and instead be sort of a "story told within the setting separate from the previous games story."

Looks like they went back on that.

I think I will watch it too, though I don't think very high of it. Actually, I'll go see it thinking it'll be bad, so if it's not, I'll be pleasantly surprised, and if it's, I won't be disappointed :)
I saw some of what had been released during Blizzcon and, unfortunately, I fear it'll be human biaised in order to tell a story anyone can relate to, not only warcraft/wow players. So perhaps a re-write of the original story yes.

Going to try and get the mid night showing, Got my nerd shirt and everything to go!

I want this movie to be good, not just because it's Warcraft but to show that we can have good video game movies! Just think about all the doors this could open if it's a huge hit.

They already rewrote the original storyline with a lot of the Burning Crusade and Caverns of Time stuff in WoW, along with novels retconning the first game's backstory a bit. The major events happened pretty much as the first game showed, but with the Horde being primarily corrupted by the Burning Legion via Gul'dan with promises of power to preserve themselves and make their clans strong and secure. Such are the survival mechanisms of all life, such is the way corruption from fel sources finds a way in.

Anyway, from what I've read in the revised lore in WoW and the books around it seems like the movie will follow that, and show that it's the greed of individuals manipulating and lying that causes the war, along with the usual "they're different so let's murder them" mentality that is also based on a survival instincts, so it's logical, though not reasonable.

Long story short, I doubt it's going to rewrite anything that hasn't already been rewritten from the stuff surrounding WoW's timelines/storyline.But it'll end up how it's supposed to end up: Stormwind in ruins, humans driven back, and an attempt for peace defeated by machinations of evil beings that causes tragedy all around. The good orcs are betrayed and killed and the a-holes under Gul'dan push the war north into Lorderon and then we get the involvement of the other races. But that'll be for the next movie... hopefully.

And as for the comic, Birdie certainly seems like she can't stay fueled up for long. Is she like a Hummer, where she's got capability but needs constant provisioning? XD

Normally I would post something to say I hope Birdy gets caught, but I'm more engrossed in knowing where this storyline is going.

Can't wait to get out and see the movie. I've been a Warcraft fan since Tides of Darkness, so it doesn't bother me that they're starting from the beginning. The more WCraft lore they cover the more I'll enjoy it.
