This is a very old pic I made early 2007 back during the early days of Burning Crusade. I was never planning on posting this as it was never meant for public eyes (I made it for an old guild website to poke fun at a guild mate of mine who underwent a similar event) the humor will be pretty much dry for everyone else, however enough people objected to my hiatus pic that I figured I should post SOMETHING.

As with most artists, older, outdated work is not something we typically like showing. My sketching quality obviously has not improved much. Just coloring. Back then I knew nothing about photoshop layers and digital coloring. I was just using paint bucket straight over my scans…ouch.

This took place back early on when my guild was still working to get Karazhan on farm status. It’s amazing how much things have changed. Back then, enhancement shamans received their attack power bonus from strength, so we had to seek out mail gear with strength on it (which was limited to pretty much just tier set pieces and PvP gear), and the class still had some utility to use 2 handers. Rock biter also still provided a flat attack power increase.

Although the only time I ever seriously used rock biter while playing Kleeyo was during some of my farming sessions when I stayed in ghost wolf from to save time mounting. You see, windfury, flametongue and frostbrand did not proc while in wolf form, but you would still receive the full benefit of rock biter. If you were duel wielding, your bites would only count as a main hand swing, whereas you would receive the full benefit of a 2 hander….so basically I would run around with a 2 hander with rock biter and be able to maul mobs to death in 2-3 hits with ghost wolf bites like some wannabe druid….oh, the things you think of when you get bored in that game…

Oh yeah, you might be able to recognize the mage! As for real-world, I'm still waiting for the unit connex to arrive, so still no scanner yet. No idea when it will show up.

Exit question: Did boredom ever allow you to discover a quirky use of game mechanics?

Never was in a guild much so I never saw any raiding. Even when I was in one I work 3rd shift so usually while most people are raiding I'm starting work. Plus I got in wit ha Hunter during WotLK, which as I understand it neutered that class quite a bit. Glad Cata gave me some oomph now. I <3 Aimed Shot.

@Rokas- Sounds like you'd just need to find a server with the right time zone for you. I.e. if you work nights or if your play period is while everyone else is asleep, you might find an oceanic server or something would suit you better, where most people are awake and peak raid hours fits in with your free time. That's unless you have a social reason to remain in the one you are in, or if you ever had any desire to raid. I know it's not for everyone, and I have all the respect in the world for people who just enjoy playing casually by themselves or with one or two buddies.

SOOOOO glad that is gone! I remember my NELF hunter finding a her first blue gun.....and she was only using bows. Back before they made the boats in SW that go Darnassus....such a headache.

Ahh the days of old when you had to level up skills as lock pick and depending on class, weapons. I actually miss much of the older mechanics... the game has gotten rather weak in areas... trying to cater to people.. but amazing work ! keep it up

I can remember leveling a few different types of weapons from 1 to max on my Paly during BC. The trick I used was to take advantage of some invulnerable guys out in Blasted Lands, who hit like a wet noodle, that you were supposed to use some item on to make them vulnerable for a quest. I would run seal of light for the little heal it gave you on weapon swing, judge them, then go make dinner. Check back in 20 minutes, top off my health, go eat. Check back, go watch a movie or whatever. Repeat as needed. Even if I was a bit too careless and didn't check in often enough and managed to die a couple of times, the repair bills were worth not having to level those weapons up manually.

Alternatively, running raids or dungeons as an overgeared healer, so I didn't really need to heal all that much. "Umm heals, why are you hitting the boss with your staff?" "Weapon skills! Everyone is alive, don't worry about it!"

completly by accident back at level 70, you would go to dire maul and ninja pass the adds (I was farming the ony sword back then). when you kill the ogre king one time I forgot to take the buff that makes adds friendly. So every add was red but woudl not attack me... EXCEPT the demon adds the warlock ogre had. But the add would just swing a punch at me and reset full life. so basically I could just leave my character there and go afk, come back my char would still be 80% full life and with almost maxed skill. It was awsome :P

Aah... Killing rats in the deeprun tram for weapon skill... And they called me mad... but it did get my skill points and many rude comments...
Also, wouldnt mind seeing more old work. This one was funny.

Oh yeah, I remember Weapon Skills. Personally I always had my WS up with all my toons and always maxed it out every few levels so i never had that much of a problem with misses. Personally I wish that Blizz never removed WS, it was a great way to show how much you were dedicated to mastering specific weapons (specially as warrior), and honestly never took too long to skill up. Heck I went from skill 1 (with pole arms) to 250something on a Tauren warrior who was built only as a tank (I was bored at that time) in Stockades on a single run. As for those who complained about having to level a skill from x after abandoning it for a while.... go solo a low level instance, you'll get it up soon enough.
grimnosh 19th Jun 2011, 3:50 PM edit delete reply
heck I even got my mage, lock, and hunter maxed at all weapons like my warrior. Took time, but it was worth it as I could always be counted on to poke a character with the Infinity Blade.
Coffinshaker 20th Jun 2011, 5:28 AM edit delete reply
uhg! I remember that! one of the crappier things about having a class with multiple weapon types. the only thing worse is when the critter attacks you back for like 1 damage. it's just embarrassing at that point

Clef, I saw both sides of your previous offering and I had decided when I checked your site for updates, I just wouldn't scroll down. I knew what you were going for and yes, it fit your use of Deathwing quite well, it just didn't fly well with someone who is very soft when it comes to baby animals. The only other time you even made me blink was Sara's remark about "nothing that cute could crawl from your crotch" which, as a mother, I admit it bugged me a bit even as I found it amusing and a classic Sara-ism. But the whole process of giving birth reduced to something so bald and semi-rude did make me blink. No, I didn't take offense to either one, but you were definitely pushing the limits to what I find entertaining. Don't sweat that, that's what artists do, they push their limits and in doing so, your readers kind of discover theirs, too. And yeah, as you discovered, they tell you ALL about it. :;chuckle::

This scene above is awesome, because I for one love seeing how an artist's work evolves with time and this is a great example of that! I know many people who had that same problem, too... oh, for the days we had to level our weapon skills! lol

Oh btw, Light's Justice never did drop for me... ::sigh/grin::

I rather enjoyed the humor in this. Also, nice usage of /wrists. Clever.

I wouldn't mind seeing more of your older work. This one was quite amuzing. :)
sacridshadow 20th Jun 2011, 8:06 AM edit delete reply
I like this. You should show more of your older work. While artists may not like showing their older work, they're often amazed at how much people like them. It doesn't matter much how it was drawn, it's all in the lines and scenarios. Drawing just allows us to visualize it better.

Also, welcome back :D

My warrior was supposed to be a weaponsmaster so I leveled every skill to max three times. Bows were just agonizing. Then they took it all away from me :(

Shaman got ap from str and agility so I ended up taking alot of rogue and hunter gear...I have very vivid memories of Kara since I had no agro drop except self-rez. Tripple windfury crit = dead shaman.

For bored mechanics..I figured out the warrior block used to count as you actively killing a mob so I would park my prot warrior on the spawn point for the guy who dropped the Lordaeron shield and farm it that way.
Bryn 20th Jun 2011, 7:25 PM edit delete reply
I lol'd so hard at this. Very awesome!

And don't let the flame war on the previous one get you down. I for one am still a loyal reader!
Clef 20th Jun 2011, 11:05 PM edit delete reply
@Nightwill- Yeah, shaman threat reduction absolutely sucked, especially during BC when shamans got all sorts of DPS buffs. One of my old guild masters was an elemental shaman. No matter how much he tried to slow his DPS, it seemed like every time elemental overload procced he would rip aggro. He got so frustrated he would just stop DPS completely at times during fights. He eventually respecced resto.

@Kayeri- I understand. Everyone has a right to be offended over whatever they feel is a taboo or touchy subject.

I know I was personally offended from a scene I saw in the movie "The Wedding Crashers" where the main characters pretended to be Purple Heart recipients in order to get free drinks at a bar. To people in the military that's a serious insult. Stolen valor is actually a punishable offense in military law (not so much in the civilian world). The point is, those characters were specifically written to be a pair of lowlife douchebags who do socially objectionable things to pick up women. I don't hold it against the writers at all, because they were tasked with the objective of "okay we got two losers...what kind of things can we make them do to make them look even MORE like losers?" Hence that scene.

In this comic, Deathwing is a perverted dumbass, Sara is an insensitive airhead, Kleeyo is short tempered gnome hater...these are my characters (or renditions of). Their traits are not mine (...well, maybe except for the gnome hating part...), regardless of what I make them do or say to make them fit in character.
Kaiser 21st Jun 2011, 5:58 PM edit delete reply
What's wrong with gnome hating? :D
Drakness 21st Jun 2011, 8:33 PM edit delete reply
lo gnome hater here but that has to do with my youngest bro faction changing to a gnome for engineer skill boost, and his char is a warrior, why not a human, or a dranei
Bloodraptor Echo Isles 21st Jun 2011, 10:03 PM edit delete reply
this comic takes me back to so many memories! leveling up weapon skills were a major pain in the buttox!

still, I like the hatred for gnomes, and I agree with deathwing with the whole pervertedness thing lol. if you're aligned with the scarlet crusade they'll beleive any lie you tell em if you make yourself sound holier than they. XD

we need more in the ways of punting gnomes. my main kills gnomes and those gnome kills make more than 90% of his PVP honor kills total. and to say as a proud member of the Horde, there is nothing wrong with hating gnomes! NOTHING! you keep hating the gnomes, and I'll be sure that if we end up in the same BG group together, I'll have your back while we kill gnomes!

been reading your comic for a while so I'm not really pissy about the updates. and I think Gorehowl was better in the hands of orc warriors. :p

but a 2hander on a shaman, you could score some nice windfury crits in a row if you do it right.
Clef 22nd Jun 2011, 1:14 AM edit delete reply
@ Drakness- Changing to a gnome to avoid having to complete those last 5 skillup points for engineering as almost understandable. I don't know how it is in cata, but in wrath it seemed like if you weren't building those 16,000 gold motorcycles you would never reach 475.
Drakness 22nd Jun 2011, 3:44 PM edit delete reply
@Clef you misunderstand he's level 55, with a weak engineering skill (200 I think it was)
Amethyst 23rd Jun 2011, 8:13 AM edit delete reply
Ha ha. I have many (un)fond memories of skilling up weapons on deeprun rats.

"Sweet a new crossbow! Oh wait...
Crossbow skill 2
Crossbow skill 3
Crossbow skill 4..."
Dsc 23rd Jun 2011, 4:41 PM edit delete reply
Just one of those things I'm glad is gone. Don't get me wrong, leveling up weapon skills was by no means hard, just tedious.
Rokas 25th Jun 2011, 12:48 PM edit delete reply
@ Clef

Engineering in Cata is a bit easier to top off than in Wrath. Not that much easier, but it hurt a lot less than in WotLK. No, the part that hurt was having to do heroics for the Chaos Orbs and getting the Truegold just to make the top-level engineering gun... and even then it's only a blue, not a purple like the old Nesignwary 4000. (or was it 5k? Whatever) and the top-level goggles look stupid now.

I actually found it easier to level my druid and her alchemy to max than to farm gold to pay for Truegold. Pain in the butt that is.

Now, Blacksmithing, THAT'S a real pain in the ass in Cata; all the designs you need to make to get more points after like 500 cost craploads of elementium, hardened elementium, and pyrium to buy, let alone make. Really annoying.
Aaron 27th Jun 2011, 6:55 AM edit delete reply
He he he... :-) Not bad, even if it isn't up to your present-day standards.

Having to level weapon skills is one thing I /don't/ miss a lot from pre-4.0 (though it was a nice change-of-pace sometimes). I /do/ wish I'd gotten Master of Arms while it was still achievable, though.
