This weekend marks S&K's 1 year anniversary.
Looking back over the past year's work I don't feel I've improved as much as I'd hoped to. I still have a problem with consistency...I've drawn 54 comics which means I've drawn Sara and Kleeyo with 54 different faces. That is still the one skill I desire to learn- to be able to draw the same character multiple times at different angles and still actually have it look like the same character rather then just identifying them by their clothing.
The only thing I improved at was compiling (the process of assembling the panels, adding the text and bubbles and screenshots) which is good because that's the monotonous, tedious part of making this comic. Managed to cut time down by about half.
I've managed to have at least something posted every week, although not always my own work. Again, thanks to Adamantine and Zartala for the work they provided me on those weeks I was short on time.
Also, special thanks to WoW insider and the Blizz official site community roundup for the extra publicity. If it weren't for them, this site wouldn't have nearly the reader base it has now.
Special thanks to all my frequent commenters. Getting feedback is the biggest motivating factor for a comic maker.
Although I highly doubt this comic will last a whole 'nother year, I will keep it going as long as I can. I do have a concluding storyline prepared, just seeing how much I can get done before I decide to start it. There's only so much content I can think of for a comic about a game that I no longer play.
As for this weeks comic, I know I got Garrosh all wrong, but I only had so much space on the paper. In-game that dude has like an 8 foot shoulder span with his head growing straight out of his sternum.

Here's to another year!

Garrosh and Thrall in stormwind?! Where is the raiding party?!
11th Dec 2011, 4:24 PM
I dunno...I'd reluctant to attack Thrall again after seeing what he did to Deathwing at the end of Deathwing's Madness....frigg'n VAPORIZED him.

Well, according to Nozdormu, once he lost Aman'thul's powerup, the dragon soul warped back to the exact instant it was taken. Which means it was destroyed moments after that use.
Besides, if my Gnomish mage had a choice she would have frozen Thrall in place and delivered the soul to the dragons herself. I can't imagine the Alliance would feel comfortable about the former leader of the Horde toting around possibly the most powerful weapon on Azeroth (Frostmourne, Ashbringer, and Neptulon's trident give it a run for its money)

Congratulations on the Anniversary Clef!
I have been a silent follower since your first WowEh fanart, but decided that I could break the silence as it has been a whole year.
About your art I personally think your characters are more than consistent enough for a comic. Heck I even managed to identify Sara in the above panels even thought most of her clothes where lacking. Your style are truly unique and to me your style feels more honest than many of the other artists out there. Still I understand your wish to improve as an artist and I know that sometimes means that one have to leave the old characters behind. After drawing the same character a number of times you are locked in that particular style, and to get further you might as well just leave the character.
Don't know if your familiar with Y. Sadamoto, but I feel his words are fitting
"- Although Eva has become one of my representative works, looking back at it, I feel that I did not develop any new methods or approaches to rendering a subject, and that I remained at a technical standstill. -When an artist follows his own style to closely, often times, he hardens up and stagnates. "

A one-year milestone is worthy of a celebration, for sure!
What a hoot! :D The look on everyone in that 3rd panel. Notice that while the adults are showing their annoyance, that Talia is the only one fully shocked. I have a feeling that she's asking herself "Do grown up girls do that?"
I can almost hear Kleeyo hissing through her teeth. "Wrong... cake... moron!" LOL
I thought at first Kleeyo is wearing a [Simple Dress] but it doesn't have the brown waistband. surely it's not just [Simple Linen Pants] and [White Linen Shirt]? (Soz - it's been a long time since I was an apprentice tailor). I'd say medium blue suits her; she'd be an autumn.

WOW! In a way, I FEEL kinda SPECIAL!
Here's to another year mate!(in a terrible British ascent.)

A bit late for the bachelor party there. But just in time to celebrate a year of a great comic. Been great reading. Keep it up Clef.

HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! xD
Been following you since I first saw your guest comic on Daily Quests :)
Love Thrall's expression in panel 3. Everone else is annoyed (except Tallia who is all o_O). Thrall has this "Hell yeah! Now that's what I'm talkin' about!" look lol. Good thing Aggra doesn't notice. Would hate to see what would be in store for the honeymoon if she did. :o
11th Dec 2011, 2:54 PM
Edit: WowEh, not Daily Quests lol. Too many WoW comics xD
11th Dec 2011, 5:41 PM
Happy Anniversary! to think a whole year has gone by already. someone delivered the wrong cake to the wrong event. XD
11th Dec 2011, 7:22 PM
I'd totally be the person in the back laughing my shift+244 off.
<- Doesn't have a high opinion of Thrall, even less so of Aggra.

You don't play wow anymore? How come? And gratz on 1 year!
12th Dec 2011, 1:16 AM
My old guild disbanded and all my in-game friends had all gradually left over the years. Without a social aspect to play, WoW gets very boring. Hanging out with close guildies in gchat and ventrillo was the only thing that made the tedious daily quests and dungeon grinds worthwhile.

Boobies! That is all. Not really... Strippers! Now that is all :P
12th Dec 2011, 4:21 PM
If I remember correctly in the early days Walt Disney distributed models of Mickey Mouse to all his animators to make his appearance more uniform through the animation. You could always get a figure print done for the basic proportions based off the wow model. Or if you have any sculpting talent you could make your own and there are posable artist dolls that may help with a little modification. Lastly but probably the most important would be visualization exercises to help lock your character's shape in your mind.
I love your comic and anything that is lacking with your artwork is more than made up by the creative and humorous storylines. Keep up the good work!
12th Dec 2011, 8:24 PM
I have been a regular reader but never commented, but hey it's 1 year!
Gotta say I have always loved the style of this comic, the artwork can be really adorable sometimes and it is nice to read one that is very tongue in cheek and actually funny!
Een if it does not carry on another year I would love to read any satires you write Clef because you are damn good at it!
Thanks for a great comic :)
13th Dec 2011, 3:27 AM
Frankly I'd rather have Kleeyo jump out of a cake, but then she'd probably pound me into snail snot. And then my tauren hunter would do the same because she's the jealo- ACK!
Toho: You're gonna get it now, fat boy.
Me: THE PAIN!
13th Dec 2011, 5:40 PM
Thanks for all the encouraging words, everyone! And welcome to those who haven't commented before!

...I can't decide which panel is better! The first of the second one, it's tearing me apart D: ...oh well i'll take both of them :D
Congrats on the 1 year anniversary, awesome comic as usual xD
The Dwarven Dude

First: Happy Anniversary, Sara & Kleeyo! Mind joining me here, Sara? ;)
Next: Unbelievable. I am now following this comic for an entire year. Everything started at Kelly Aarons' "Wow Eh?" where the drawing style of a particular guest comic captured my unshared attention.
Why? Because it was something - at least for me - new. Some, and thats the point, honest drawing with funny say hilarious content.
I have many webcomics up here in my favourites. And frequently some of'em say goodbye to my attention forever. That has many reasons. Sometimes the storyline is just boring or worse forced. Sometimes the plot is drawn "uber-professional" but feels meaning-/soulless. Somethimes the story looks like being drawn by an infant. And sometimes I can't feel familiar with the characters used. But none of the herefore mentioned applies to your work, Clef.
Blimey, I must sound like some gibberish fanboi, but I really adore the work and improvement done here.
Too, I really hope, no, insist, that this comic WILL last another year or even longer. I'd really miss the charming, naughty and hilarious presence of your two chaotians. (Lava Burst!)
And why are you thinking you are not able to draw rememberable characters? Let me go back a bit. How many characters/toons have you drawn/used yet? Sara, Kleeyo, Fordring, Tallia, Jyosette, Emo-Wing. They always looked the remarkable "same", except to many positive improvements you made during this year (which I always commented). So, do not hesitate to keep up your effing good work, mate. If you do not play the game anymore, think mayhaps about something own. Some "own" comic without copyrighted content where you can even sack some quids with.
I am sure I could've written many many lines more but that'd be too much. Just one thing more: Keep it up! I love it!
P.S.I: I specially enjoyed imagining Garrosh fighting himself on this rickety chair. ^_^
P.S.II: Are you doing commissions, Clef?
15th Dec 2011, 4:25 PM
Thanks for the kind words, Dwarven Dude!
Oh, believe me, I would absolutely KILL to do an original comic. Unfortunately it wouldn't have nearly the reader base if I did. Probably not even enough to make the effort worthwhile. Tens of millions of people have played WoW, which means there's tens of millions of potential readers that could relate to this comic. I see so many other original web comics with 10x better art and story that have very few readers. So often its not about skill, but about theme.
As for commissions, I highly doubt there would be people willing to buy artwork like mine. But if you have something you want me to draw, I can draw it. I wont even charge for it.

Totally love this web comic Clef, as with Dwarven Dude, I came across it when reading Wow Eh?. You produce great artwork, superb memorable characters, excellent funny stories, and easter-eggs planted within the stories. Clef, long may you continue to draw Sara and Kleeyo, your webcomic always put a smile on my face, even if I'm having a bad day.
